Rotarians Sign the Survivor's Appeal

The hibakusha (atom bomb survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki) have issued a unified appeal that says, in part:
“So that the people from future generations will not have to experience hell on earth, we want to realize a world free of nuclear weapons while we are still alive.”
The Hibakusha supported the signing of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons at the United Nations in July 2017. Rotarians support the Hibakusha Appeal to end nuclear weapons and the entering into force of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. You can read it here: http://www.icanw.org/treaty-on-the-prohibition-of-nuclear-weapons/
Join your voice with those of the Hibakusha and millions of others to say “Never Again."

The world needs a united effort to eradicate nuclear weapons. Just like we did with Polio. Nuclear weapons are a disaster waiting to happen.

Join us in educating the people about it.

We need each one of you.

The truth about nuclear weapons is that the cost of maintaining nuclear arsenals diverts the international community from achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development goals. The possession, use, or threat of using nuclear weapons, which would inflict mass destruction upon innocent civilians and the planet, is not fair to all concerned. Nor does the current nonproliferation regime, which enables a handful of countries to possess these weapons and threaten the existence of others, build good will and better friendships. Today Rotarians have the opportunity and responsibility to prevent nuclear war through the elimination of nuclear weapons. Along with the Hibakusha, we strongly affirm the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Rotarians, especially in countries which have not yet signed or ratified the Treaty, have considerable influence to shift public opinion on this urgent humanitarian issue. Rotary can play a pivotal role in moving us toward a world free of nuclear weapons; it is in keeping with the best of our tradition that we rise to this challenge.

We must move quickly to abolition of nuclear weapons. We cannot rely on luck, accidental use, or even knowledge of the consequences to prevent nuclear war. The emergency plan for nuclear weapons is abolition. Rotarians can make the difference: educate, eliminate.
